About this service
Aintree’s Trauma and Orthopaedic department provides a comprehensive trauma and elective service that diagnoses and treats conditions and disorders of the limbs and joints.
Our team of highly skilled Orthopaedic Surgeons provide a wide range of high quality elective (planned) orthopaedic and trauma procedures in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Trauma patients are often referred to the department via the Accident and Emergency department or as part of the Cheshire and Merseyside Major Trauma Centre, in partnership with the Walton Centre and the Royal Liverpool Hospital
Services and treatments provided include
- 24 hour on call service for all Trauma cases
- Fracture and elective clinic
- Specialist arthroplasty (Joint replacement) clinics
- A GP hotline
- A bone donation facility
- Physiotherapy triage clinics
- Dressing clinics
- Orthotic Department
The aim of the department is to provide efficient, friendly and high quality advice, assessment, diagnosis and treatment to enable optimum recovery.
Referral information
Referral to the service can come via the Physiotherapy Department, through our Musculo Skeletal Assessment Service (MCAS) team via GP or referral through A&E.
The Team
The Trauma and Orthopaedics department is comprised of highly experienced orthopaedic consultants and doctors supported by a dedicated nursing team as well as physiotherapists, theatre staff and support teams.
The Department also employs a full time research coordinator to work with the medical and professional staff on numerous research projects.

Sharon Scott is a full time orthopaedic surgeon, with a specialist interest in orthopaedic trauma surgery and the Clinical Director for Major Trauma. She is the governance lead for the Major Trauma Centre Collaborative and maintain an active role within the network.

Simon Barton, Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon
Simon Barton was appointed as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopedic Surgeon at Aintree University Hospital in August 2018.
Having qualified from Edinburgh University in 2005, he completed early surgical training in the South East of Scotland, Western Australia and Yorkshire.
His higher Orthopaedic Specialist training was on the North West (Manchester) rotation, and he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2015.
Simon, subsequently embarked on two subspecialty Fellowships to further expand his expertise in the management of soft tissue knee injuries, patello-femoral disorders and joint preserving solutions for arthritis.
Having completed sports knee fellowship training at Wrightington Hospital Simon delivers a modern, patient specific approach to soft tissue injuries of the knee. Further fellowship training in Bristol (Avon Orthopaedic Centre) informed my subspecialty interest in joint preserving surgery (osteotomy and partial knee replacement) and disorders of patello-femoral joint (instability and anterior knee pain).
Simon, has a lifelong interest in sports and exercise, having played representative rugby into his 20s. Ongoing research to complete a Masters in Sports and Exercise Medicine from Bath University has broadened his understanding of injury prevention and rehabilitation, while building relationships nationally with experienced sports medics and physiotherapists.
