About this service

Aintree’s nephrology/renal service provides treatment and care for patients across Merseyside who have kidney (renal) problems such as renal failure, vasculitis, nephrotic syndrome, and anaemia.

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine that concerns itself with the study of normal kidney function, kidney problems, the treatment of kidney problems and renal replacement therapy (dialysis and kidney transplantation.

Treatment and specialist services provided include:

  • Acute Haemodialysis
  • Chronic Haemodialysis Satellite Units
    • Southport Fresenius dialysis Unit based at Southport hospital supporting outpatient dialysis for patients living around Southport
    • Management of Waterloo Satellite Unit providing holiday dialysis facility
  • Home haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis programme with dedicated home therapies training facility
  • Acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease care
  • Dedicated outpatient facilities
  • Anaemia management
  • Conservative kidney management
  • Plasma exchange services
  • AKI Advanced Nurse Practitioners supporting the care of admitted patients with Acute Kidney Injury across the hospital

Facilities

Ward 15 is the Renal Ward, with the Acute Dialysis Unit and Home Therapies Training based on the adjoining Ward 14. Outpatient services are based at the Elective Care Centre and Diabetes Centre at Aintree University Hospital.

The Team

The Renal Centre team is comprises of specialist consultants and specialist nurses, including transplant nurses.

Our consultant team includes:

  • Dr Christopher Goldsmith, Clinical Director, Nephrology. Consultant Nephrologist and Physician , GMC No: 4714635

  • Dr Abraham Abraham, Consultant Nephrologist and Physician , GMC No: 5172044

    Dr Abraham Abraham qualified in India and went on to specialise in general medicine before training further as an intensivist. He then moved to Ireland where he trained in nephrology and transplantation medicine. After completing his training, he continued working in Dublin as a lecturer and research fellow with an interest in maternal and transplant medicine. Dr Abraham moved to Liverpool in 2002 as a consultant nephrologist to set up the Aintree Renal Unit with a colleague and was clinical director until 2007.

    Dr Abraham was an active member on the Executive Committee of the UK Renal Registry until 2012 and the Executive Committee of the Renal Association until 2013. He stepped down from the post of Regional Advisor for Renal Medicine in 2014. Currently, he remains a member of the Cheshire & Merseyside Renal IT Board, chair of the regional Specialist Training Committee, clinical lead of the regional Kidney Care Network, co-chair of the regional AKI collaboration and a member of the national Kidney Health Partnership Board.
