About this service

Palliative care is the active, total care of patients (and their families, friends and/or carers) that have life threatening disease or conditions.

Aintree’s Palliative Care service is provided by a compassionate team of skilled palliative care specialists who work to control pain and other symptoms whilst offering emotional support, relevant information, active referral and signposting pathways at what can be a very distressing time.

The Palliative Care service consists of:

  • Specialist Palliative Care Hospital Support Team,
  • Specialist Palliative Care In-Patient Unit based at Woodlands Hospice
  • Specialist Palliative Day Therapy and Community Outreach Team based at Woodland Hospice
  • Outpatient clinics, held at both Aintree and Woodlands Hospice

Complimenting hospital and primary care team in providing specialist palliative care, the service provides a range of support and treatment that includes:  

  • Providing relief from pain and other distressing symptoms
  • Integrating the psychological and spiritual aspects of patient care
  • Providing support early in the course of an illness in conjunction with other treatments
  • Offering a support system to help patients to live as actively as possible until death and to help families to cope during a patient’s illness and in their own bereavement
  • Providing support to cancer specific multidisciplinary teams
  • Providing an education programme for hospital and community staff and colleagues

The Team

The service is led by a team of highly specialised and experienced Palliative Care Consultants.
