About this service

Our Department of Medicine for the Elderly (DME) provides a range of specialised treatment and rehabilitation support for elderly/older patients both within the hospital, in outpatient clinics and within the local community.

The Department runs specialist clinics and works closely with the members of the wider hospital team, such as physiotherapy, primary care, community and social service colleagues, to provide an integrated and supportive service for our patients.

The Department also provides a high quality stroke service – for full information please visit our Stroke service page.

Our elderly medicine clinics and services include:

  • Falls clinic – patients are assessed by our Falls team, assisted by the Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy teams
  • Metabolic Bone Services (for Osteoporosis and other bone diseases)
  • General medicine clinics
  • Parkinson’s disease clinics
  • Stroke service – for the assessment, prevention and rehabilitation of stroke patients.
  • Inpatient rehabilitation enhanced by an onsite, purpose built rehabilitation unit to facilitate early transfer of patients from the acute wards.

Facilities

The Department comprises Wards 31, 32, 34, the Acute Frailty Unit and a purpose built Assessment and Rehabilitation Day Unit (ARDU).

The Acute Frailty Unit, opened in 2014, is a custom designed unit that provides urgent care and assessment for our older patients, reducing any unnecessary hospital stays and helping to get patients home as soon as possible.

The ARDU largely houses multidisciplinary outpatient activity, such as assessment clinics.

Referral information

Referrals are made by GP, via Choose and Book or by writing directly to one of the consultants. Consultants are also able to refer patients from other areas of the Trust or from other hospitals.

The criteria for admission are not dictated by age alone; the vast majority of patients are aged 65 years or above, however younger patients who may benefit from our services have access to them, particularly patients suffering from stroke.

The Team

The Department is led by a team of consultant geriatricians, supported by the lead nurse for Older People and Dementia and seven specialist nurses in stroke, falls, osteoporosis and Parkinson’s disease

The Department is supported by a strong multidisciplinary team that includes physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and dietitians.
