About this service

Our Critical Care Department provides life sustaining treatment to patients with severe life-threatening illnesses and to patients after major surgical procedures.

All patients are cared for and managed by a multi-professional team dedicated to delivering safe, high quality care, supporting families with compassion and understanding during what can be a very difficult time for friends and families of a critically ill patient.

The dedicated team is responsible for:

  • Looking after critically ill patients in the hospital
  • Looking after patients after major operations
  • Follow up of these patients after they are discharged to the wards
  • Follow up of these patients after they are discharged home
  • Providing first responder support to all unstable patients in the hospital
  • Providing support to all patients with serious medical illnesses and instability

The departments specialises in the Critical Care management of major liver surgery, upper GI surgery, head & neck surgery and major trauma.

Patient support services

The unit is supported by a multi-denominational chaplaincy department.

Patients are supported by our extensive multidisciplinary team including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists, a dietician and other members for the team.

Patient aftercare

A Critical Care Follow Up Clinic is held weekly for any patients who have spent more than three days in the department.

Patients and relatives will be sent an invitation to a Follow Up clinic to discuss their stay and recovery around two to three months after their discharge from hospital.

This allows the team to answer any queries patients may have and ensure they are making a full recovery.

Facilities

The Critical Care Department contains an 11 bed intensive care unit and a 12 bed high dependency unit.

Referral information

Referrals to Critical Care are made by any of the doctors or nurses in the hospital when they are concerned about a patient.
